Obsidian Properties & Meaning

Black Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass that was formed by molten lava that cooled down too fast to crystallize. Since the beginning of human civilization, this crystal has been used to create spears, knives, axes, and arrowheads. The reason for its popularity in weaponry was that, although not particularly hard (Mohs hardness = 5-6), when broken, Obsidian forms very sharp edges that can get as sharp as a razor blade! Obsidian tools can produce cutting edges many times finer than even the best steel scalpels. For this reason, it is also used in modern surgery and dentistry as replacements for steel surgical tools. This natural sharpness is also why many believe that, without causing harm, this crystal can pierce your aura to purge and release blockages or accumulated karmic baggage. Another interesting fact is that Obsidian became quite popular after its appearance in the TV series “Game of Thrones” starring as “Dragon Glass,” which was used to fight the “white walkers.”
