Sunstone
What creates the sparkling effect in sunstone?
The signature glitter or "schiller" effect in sunstone is created by tiny platelets of copper, hematite, or goethite naturally included within the crystal. When light hits these metallic inclusions, it creates a sparkling effect that appears to float within the stone. The size, density, and arrangement of these inclusions vary in each specimen, making every piece unique. This natural phenomenon is called aventurescence and is different from the play of color seen in other stones like labradorite or opal.
How can I tell if my sunstone is natural or synthetic?
Natural sunstone has several distinguishing characteristics. The sparkles should appear to float at different depths within the stone rather than just on the surface. The base color should show natural variations rather than being perfectly uniform. When turned under light, the sparkles should move naturally and may not be present throughout the entire stone. Synthetic stones often show too-perfect arrangements of glitter or unnaturally vivid colors. Additionally, natural sunstone feels cool to the touch and warms slowly in your hand.
What's the best way to display and care for sunstone?
To showcase sunstone's brilliant sparkle, position it where it can catch and reflect light. Natural or directional lighting works best to highlight its aventurescence. Clean your sunstone with a soft, slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. While sunstone is relatively durable, it can scratch if stored with harder materials, so keep it in a soft pouch or separate compartment. Despite its name and sunny appearance, avoid leaving sunstone in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this may affect its color over time.
Sunstone radiates with a warm, metallic sparkle that dances like captured sunlight across its surface. Our specimens feature the distinctive copper-colored schiller effect that makes this feldspar variety so captivating, creating a natural glitter that moves as the stone is turned.
