What makes some obsidian appear iridescent or have patterns?

The iridescent sheen found in rainbow obsidian occurs when microscopic mineral inclusions create thin layers within the glass that refract light, producing colorful displays. Snowflake obsidian's white patterns are created by small, radiating crystals of cristobalite that formed during the cooling of the volcanic glass. These natural phenomena occur during formation and make each piece unique. Other varieties like gold sheen or silver sheen obsidian get their distinctive appearance from tiny inclusions of magnetite or feldspar crystals.

Is it normal for obsidian to be extremely smooth and glass-like?

Yes, obsidian's glass-like quality is completely natural and is one of its defining characteristics. As volcanic glass, it forms when molten rock cools so rapidly that crystals don't have time to develop, resulting in a smooth, vitreous texture. The glass-like appearance and conchoidal (shell-like) fracture patterns are reliable indicators of genuine obsidian. However, the surface should feel cool to the touch and may show subtle surface markings that distinguish it from manufactured glass.

How should I handle and store my obsidian safely?

While obsidian is hard, its glass-like nature means it can be brittle and may chip if dropped on hard surfaces. Store your obsidian pieces separately in soft pouches or padded containers to prevent scratches and impacts. When handling larger pieces, always support them from the bottom rather than gripping edges or points. Clean your obsidian using a soft, dry cloth, or if needed, lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding extreme temperature changes that could cause thermal shock. Be particularly careful with thin edges or carved pieces, as these areas can be more vulnerable to damage.
