Orthoceras Properties & Meaning
Fossilized Orthoceras, also known as “Orthoceratites,” are among the modern-day squid’s ancestors. These sea creatures existed around 485 million years ago and could grow from 1 cm up to 14 feet in length. Amazingly, they could both swim and crawl along the ocean floor. The most interesting part is that they swam by filling their shells with air (which allowed them to float) and then propelled themselves by squirting jets of water. This unique ability enabled them to move in any direction they pleased. After the Orthoceras died, their shells accumulated at the bottom of the ocean and slowly fossilized over time. It’s very rare for a creature to pass from the animal kingdom to the mineral kingdom like this, which is another reason why they are so special and desirable. Remember, though, to handle these impressive fossils with care, as they have a low Mohs hardness of 3.5-4 and can be easily scratched or broken.
