Opal Properties & Meaning

The term “Opal” is adapted from the Latin word “Opalus.” It is also believed to have originated from the Sanskrit word “Upala,” meaning “precious stone.” Opals come in a large variety of colors and clarity and have a water content usually between 6-10%. This high water content and moderate Mohs hardness (5.5-6.5), means that Opals are easily broken and cracked. Despite their variety, there are three main categories of Opal: (1) Common Opal (also known as “Potch”), (2) Precious Opal (also known as “Noble Opal” and “Rainbow Opal”), and (3) Fire Opal. The main difference between the categories is that Precious and Fire Opals display fiery iridescent rainbow colors that shift and change in the light, while Common Opals do not. Furthermore, unlike Precious Opals, which are white with bright sparkles of rainbow-like colors, Fire Opals are transparent or translucent and have a vivid body with colors such as red, orange, or yellow. Opal can be found all over the world, but some of the best specimens can be found in Australia and Ethiopia. Ethiopian Rough Opal calms the mind, helps to relieve stress, and counters depression. This is the reason why it is the ideal crystal for restless and overthinking minds.
