Rhodochrosite Properties & Meaning

Rhodochrosite’s name originates from the Greek word “rhodos,” meaning “rose.” Rhodochrosite is transparent to translucent and comes in various shades of rose-red to pale brown. It also often has white and, rarely, black wavy banding. Additionally, it has a Mohs hardness of  3.5-4 and is mainly found in Argentina, where it’s the national gem. It’s known in the gemstone market as “Inca Rose” because it can grow to look like the flower. Also, pre-Columbian civilizations would often wear Inca Rose as ornamental jewelry.
