Slippery Elm Properties

Slippery Elm Bark has been used as an herbal remedy in North America for centuries. Native Americans used Slippery Elm for healing people suffering from wounds, boils, ulcers, burns, and skin inflammation. It was also taken orally to relieve coughs, sore throats, diarrhea, and other stomach problems. Furthermore, this herb contains mucilage, a substance that becomes a slick gel when mixed with water. Therefore, it coats and soothes the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines when ingested as a tea. Moreover, this also helps protect the gastrointestinal tract against ulcers and excess acidity. Overall, Slippery Elm is quite popular due to the following properties:

Anti-inflammatory: This herb has historically been used to calm sore throats and reduce swelling. Furthermore, it contains mucilage, which coats and soothes. It’s also good to relive joint pain.
Promotes wound healing: Slippery Elm has a coagulant property that helps promote wound healing. The mucilage can also provide a natural protective layer, helping protect cuts and scrapes from infections and irritation. Moreover, salves and balms may be made from the bark to help speed the healing process.
Improves circulation: The anti-inflammatory properties of Slippery Elm also help improve blood circulation. By keeping the arterial walls supple and flexible, blood is pumped more efficiently from the heart, reducing pressure in the circulatory system. In addition, Iron is also present in slippery elm, which is essential for the healthy production of red blood cells.
Treats gastric ulcers: The thick mucilage of Slippery Elm coats the interior of the stomach, providing protection against harsh stomach acids. Coupled with the healing properties and analgesic effects, Slippery Elm is soothing and healing for gastric ulcers.
Detox and cleanse: It may also be used as a diuretic, helping your body remove excess salts and toxins from the body. It may also help with the bloating sensation of extra water, also known “water weight.”
Natural pain relief: This bark may be used to create teas and tinctures which can be applied to open wounds or ingested for internal relief. This wonderful herb may also be made into a balm, for pulled muscles or bruises. When this balm is applied, users notice a fairly rapid decline of their pain.

Wow I’m so impressed with these herbs! I learned about Slippery Elm in school and was pleasantly surprised to see they had them in the Pierrefonds crystal store. I have been really enjoying trying out different ways to use these herbs.
